Penn State's Terry Smith wants to be considered for the permanent role image

Interim coach Terry Smith says he wants the permanent job at Penn State, and the longtime assistant may soon get his formal chance to make that case.

With the Nittany Lions’ coaching search now having stretched on week, multiple reports indicate the university plans to interview Smith for the full-time position.

Smith is widely respected for his recruiting ties and player relationships, holds one clear advantage over several external candidates that he’s available now. Missouri’s Eli Drinkwitz and James Madison’s Bob Chesney remain in the midst of late-season pushes, limiting when they can meet with Penn State officials.

Smith’s candidacy comes as the school recalibrates following a surprising twist in the search. Nebraska coach Matt Rhule and Texas A&M coach Mike Elko have both signed extensions with their respective schools.

For now, Smith remains in place, steadying the program and openly campaigning for the role he calls “the opportunity of a lifetime.
