No. 6 Oregon outlasted No. 3 Penn State 30-24 in double overtime on Saturday. The Ducks hammered away at the Nittany Lions and withstanding a furious fourth-quarter rally in the matchup of Big Ten favorites.
The first half featured only a field goal for each side before Oregon seized control after the break. The Ducks scored touchdowns on their first two possessions, including an 80-yard march capped by a short Dante Moore pass to Dierre Hill.
The Oregon QB made his first start in a marquee game and went 29-of-39 for 248 yards and three touchdowns. Hill added 82 yards on 10 carries, while receiver Dakorien Moore added 89 yards for the Ducks offense.
Penn State was sluggish for much of the game. They finally came to life late behind quarterback Drew Allar. He finished with 179 total yards and tossed two fourth-quarter touchdowns, including a 35-yard strike to Devonte Ross and a shovel pass for the game-tying score with 30 seconds left.
In the first overtime, Penn State struck first with a Nick Singleton touchdown run to go up 24-17. Oregon responded with a 2-yard scoring pass to even the score at 24. The Ducks opened the second extra frame with a 25-yard touchdown throw, then failed to convert the two-point try. But safety Dillon Thieneman intercepted Allar on Penn State’s first play to seal the win.
Oregon’s aggressive defense held Penn State to 2.8 yards per play and just 276 total yards, with 137 of those coming in the Lions’ two late drives.
The loss extends Penn State’s struggles under James Franklin against top-five opponents, a streak dating back to a 2016 upset of Ohio State.
