Los Angeles Chargers quarterback Justin Herbert is off to a great start to his 2025 season, despite last Sunday's loss to the New York Giants.

The former Oregon standout has completed 63.8% of his passes, throwing for 1063 yards along with seven touchdowns to three interceptions. Most sports books have Herbert near the top in MVP odds.

With a matchup against the Washington Commanders and up-and-coming star quarterback Jayden Daniels on deck, ESPN's First Take had a debate regarding who you would rather build your franchise around, Herbert or Daniels, and former NFL MVP Cam Newton had a ringing endorsement for the former Oregon Duck.

Cam Newton says he would build a franchise around Justin Herbert over Jayden Daniels

Newton, while debating with the likes of Stephen A. Smith and former NFL defensive back Ryan Clark, claimed he would take Herbert over Daniels in a heartbeat.

"I would take Justin Archibald Herbert, final answer," Newton exclaimed.

"I know that (Ryan Clark) is so tied at the hip with not only Jayden Daniels, you know his whole family. And I get it, I understand, but let’s just bring back that CVS receipt real quick because I know where RC is gonna go. He’s gonna go with Jayden Daniels. But on this show, a couple of weeks ago, September 25, 2025, your boy RC wearing that olive green suit said that Justin Herbert was extremely talented and he is probably playing the best football we’ve probably seen him play."

It's hard to disagree with Newton, considering Herbert has been a top-10 quarterback in the NFL since his rookie season. Daniels, who is fantastic in his own right, is only in his second year in the league and has a lot of ground to cover before he's in the same upper echelon of top quarterbacks.

It will be fun to watch on Sunday, as the two young signal callers attempt to lead their teams to victory over one another.
