With the college football coaching carousel spinning at full speed, Ole Miss appears to be drawing a line in the sand for Lane Kiffin as speculation intensifies about his future.

According to report by OutKick's Trey Wallace, the Rebels have given Kiffin an informal deadline to decide whether he plans to sign a contract extension he's been holding onto for weeks, or pursue other options. As rumors continue connecting him to open jobs at Florida and LSU, many want to know his next move. 

Kiffin has led Ole Miss to 10-1 record with a dramatic home win over Florida last weekend. He now finds himself at the center of the sport’s most pivotal coaching decision with three weeks left before conference championship weekend.

Despite the Rebels’ on-field success, officials in Oxford worry about navigating the program’s future while Kiffin weighs competing opportunities.

According to Wallace, Ole Miss administrators want clarity from Kiffin by next weekend, potentially setting up an awkward finish to the regular season, if the situation bleeds into Egg Bowl week. Behind the scenes, some decision makers in Oxford have begun quietly evaluating contingency options should Kiffin choose to leave.

It's a family affair outside of Oxford 

To make matters more complicated, reports have surface that members of Kiffin’s family have recently visited Gainesville and Baton Rouge. Wallace also reported Kiffin has had recent conversations with Florida officials, while LSU is also believed to be preparing a formal offer. 

One Power Four athletic director told OutKick, “Two can play that game,” leading to a tense standoff unfolding between Ole Miss and its star coach.

What's on Kiffin’s mind right now?

For Kiffin, this extends beyond a hefty salary. He has previously vetted both Florida and LSU and is considered familiar with the dynamics at each program. Those close to him describe a coach genuinely torn, weighing stability in Oxford against the championship ceilings in Gainesville and Baton Rouge. LSU’s pursuit, which is being handled by influential agent Jimmy Sexton, is viewed by some insiders as the most serious threat.

The timing raises practical questions. With the transfer portal opening Jan. 2, Ole Miss cannot afford prolonged uncertainty. And Rebels administrators privately acknowledge they cannot enter postseason play with a coach on the verge of leaving.

Florida and LSU are eager to fight this out, but a bidding war become dangerous. What's Kiffin's value worth? Over Georgia's Kirby Smart in the $17-15 million per year base salary?
