Ohio State coach Ryan Day declined again Tuesday to discuss injuries to several key contributors as the top-ranked Buckeyes prepare for their final home game of the regular season against Rutgers.
Day would not detail the status of standout receivers Jeremiah Smith and Carnell Tate, both of whom are dealing with undisclosed injuries. Tate has missed the past two games, while Smith played only the first half of Saturday’s 48-10 win over UCLA after appearing to limp late in the second quarter.
“Our policy is we don’t discuss specifics on injuries, and once you start going down a little bit here, a little bit there, you can create a problem,” Day said via ESPN. “We put out the report the day of the game, but I can tell you they’re in great spirits. The medical staff is working hard, and we’ll take it day to day.”
Smith lead the Big Ten with ten touchdown catches and was listed as questionable last week but opened the game with a highlight one-handed grab before sitting the second half. Tate, who fifth in the conference in receiving yards per game, was ruled out.
“Everybody has to be at their best right now,” Day added. “What’s happened in the past doesn’t affect this team.”
Ohio State now turns its attention to Rutgers before a trip to Ann Arbor to face Michigan. If the Wolverines can stay perfect, a date with Indiana in the Big Ten Championship will likely follow in the first week of December.
