Notre Dame's Marcus Freeman reportedly 'name to watch' in upcoming NFL coaching cycle image

Notre Dame coach Marcus Freeman is once again drawing interest from the NFL as franchises prepare for another round of coaching searches.

While a jump from college to the pros is unlikely league decision-makers are trending younger and placing value on leadership traits that translate across both levels. One of the major boxes Freeman checks off. His name back onto the list of potential candidates, according to NFL Network reporter Tom Pelissero

Freeman was listed as a coach to watch, noting that he received attention from several teams last offseason. The Chicago Bears were among the franchises that inquired before ultimately hiring Lions assistant Ben Johnson. With multiple jobs expected to open this winter, Freeman is likely to be vetted again. Will he be the next to jump?

“(Freeman) is an engaging presence who will win the interview — if and when he’s willing to take one,” Pelissero wrote.

Freeman’s quick rise in the profession, from his first graduate assistant job at Ohio State in 2010 to leading Notre Dame just over a decade later is a fast-track many don't take.

Since replacing Brian Kelly in 2021, Freeman has guided the Fighting Irish to a 41-12 record. Notre Dame is currently ninth and chasing another College Football Playoff berth.

Freeman’s personality may be just as appealing as his on-field results. There could be an NFL franchise to take a swing at him.
