UNC's Michael Lombardi ripped for ill-timed post amid Bill Belichick drama image

The news coming out of Chapel Hill this week hasn't been good. After the North Carolina Tar Heels dropped below .500 with a 38-10 loss against the Clemson Tigers, Bill Belichick has been squarely in the spotlight.

There have been numerous reports about the football program currently being in disarray, with fights between players, an assistant coach being suspended, and Belichick discussing an "exit strategy" with UNC's administration. Despite an obvious "Toxic environment" in Chapel Hill, there were separate statements released on Wednesday night from both Belichick and athletic director Bubba Cunningham to reassure everything was "business as usual.

Outside of what seems like the beginning of the end for the legendary NFL coach, his handpicked general manager dropped an ill-timed article, leaving many to wonder what's really going on at UNC. Michael Lombardi latest, "How Great Leaders Motivate the Already Great," was published on his "The Daily Coach" site Thursday morning. He used an example of the Ryder Cup struggles for the US, but also shared a bit about Bill Parcells using a fake trade to motivate NFL great and UNC alum Lawrence Taylor.

"Parcells understood Taylor was capable of playing better, so he devised a motivational technique to stir Taylor’s competitive juices," Lombardi wrote. "Parcells placed a round-trip ticket to New Orleans on the stool in Taylor’s locker, leaving Saturday, returning Monday. If Taylor used the ticket and headed to the Big Easy, he would have missed his game against the Rams. Taylor wasn’t shy about having a good time and would’ve loved a free first-class ticket to New Orleans if he didn’t have a game that weekend.

"Confused, Taylor went in to see Parcells and asked what the trip to New Orleans was all about. Parcells told Taylor he made a deal with the Saints to lend them Taylor for the weekend, and in return, they’d send (Pat) Swilling to New York. Clearly, this fake trade pissed off Taylor, who went out and played his best against the Rams. What Parcells did was trigger his great player into proving his greatness. Parcells knew Taylor would want to prove him wrong. He made it personal, and Taylor would never want to hear Parcells complain again. There was no way Taylor could face Parcells if he didn’t play his best."

Was this a subtle shot at the UNC players? If not, the timing is terrible. Lombardi took heat from several people on social media as well.

"It's an unstructured mess," a source with first-hand knowledge of the UNC program told WRAL News. "There's no culture, no organization. It's a complete disaster."

Multiple sources believe the Tar Heels locker room is divided due to a disorganized coaching staff and a failure to communicate.

"It's all starting at the top, and the boys are being affected," a parent of a current UNC player said under the condition of anonymity told WRAL. "I don't fault the players; I fault the leadership that created this toxic environment. There's an individualistic mindset. The boys are young, and they are feeding into it."

Lombardi's words are just fuel to the forest fire burning at UNC. Coming in with the "33rd NFL team" approach was clearly a mistake. This is a program in need of a coach and his staff to develop talent for the next level, not one who will foster what's happening currently.
