UNC's former NFL head coach fired from Bill Belichick's staff image

The North Carolina Tar Heels did not put together the first season Bill Belichick would've wanted.

Now, UNC is shaking up its coaching staff to try and make things better in 2026.

Belichick and the Tar Heels have dismissed Freddie Kitchens from his role as offensive coordinator, according to On3 Sports.

Kitchens actually preceded Belichick at UNC. He was the tight ends coach in both 2023 and 2024.

He was the only position coach that Belichick retained from the Mack Brown era.

Kitchens had been the interim head coach for UNC in the Fenway Bowl at the end of last season.

Much of Kitchens' coaching career happened in the NFL, including as head coach of the Cleveland Browns in 2019.

This season, North Carolina had a brutal offensive output. The Tar Heels were 131st out of 136 in FBS in total offense. They only topped 30 points once, against FCS Richmond.

This is the first season North Carolina won't play in a bowl game since 2018, as they finished with a 4-8 record.

For Belichick's second season to have more success than the first, the Tar Heels will have to score more points. It sounds simple, but apparently it's not that easy.

It'll be someone other than Kitchens calling the shots to try and make it happen.
