North Carolina abandons Hulu series after rough start image

Bill Belichick’s first season as the North Carolina head football coach began with a less than stellar beginning from the NFL great. Courtesy of a report from Inside Carolina, the university has decided to scrap plans for a Hulu series chronicling Belichick’s Tar Heels.

The Hulu series was not the first bite at the apple for a possible docuseries. A previous plan to join the famous HBO “Hard Knocks” series was also scrapped prior to the start of the 2025 regular season. Arguably the greatest coach in NFL history coaching college would have been a ratings boom for a 'college Hard Knocks' if they chose to move forward with the project. However, Home Box Office had some concerns that lead to that project not moving forward.

Following the HBO decision, “discomfort with the role of Belichick’s girlfriend” were raised regarding the role Jordan Hudson would play in the project. UNC officials denied those reports claiming the final decision ultimately came down to Belichick. According to ESPN, Belichick soured on the HBO project because it “planned to follow North Carolina only through fall camp”, while Belichick wanted an opportunity to “showcase the full breadth of the Tar Heels" season.

Documents obtained by and courtesy of ESPN via public records request showed that Hudson would have likely had a sizable role in any documentary. Including a "talking points" memo from the school's PR department claiming, "Jordon is playing an active role in the filming and production of a documentary about Coach Belichick's first season of college football, so in that capacity, she may be seen on the sidelines of Carolina Football practices or games."

While Hudson’s involvement could play a part in the Hulu decision, cancelling the project at this juncture could have more to do with Belichick’s Tar Heels issues on the field. In the early portion of year one under Belichick, the Tar Heels have dropped their first three games vs power 4 opponents. Those opponents have won by a combined score of 120-33.

To complicate the tone of the program, UNC GM Michael Lombardi recently in a letter to donors asked for patience during a rebuilding period. In that letter, Lombardi referenced players they lost despite adding 70 players from the transfer portal. That sentiment seems a tad odd considering Belichick had not used “rebuild” as part of any offseason comments.

Currently there is no plan to produce such a streaming series, however, they have been capturing content since the offseason. Whether that content ever makes its way to a network or streaming service is currently unknown.
