Gio Lopez threw for 203 yards and two touchdowns as North Carolina beat Stanford 20-15 on Saturday night. Bill Belichick’s second straight Atlantic Coast Conference win, keeping bowl hopes alive in his first season at Chapel Hill.
Jordan Shipp led the Tar Heels with 83 yards receiving on five catches, including a 55-yard touchdown early in the fourth quarter that pushed the lead to 20-3. Lopez also connected with Davion Gause on a 20-yard score.
“Good win,” Belichick said. “Good to win at home. Always good to win at home. Proud of our team.”
North Carolina’s defense produced nine sacks and held Stanford without a touchdown until late in the fourth quarter. Stanford's Elijah Brown threw for 268 yards with a touchdown and an interception but was under constant pressure.
Stanford trimmed the deficit with two late scores with 1:48 left, but failed to recover the ensuing onside kick.
The win gave Belichick his first at home since taking over at UNC in January. A Tar Heel State trio to round out the month with Wake Forest, Duke, and NC State.
