Urban Meyer issues direct response to rumors about Bill Belichick's future at UNC image

Urban Meyer has weighed in on Bill Belichick’s rocky start as North Carolina’s head coach, offering a rare perspective around what's happening in Chapel Hill. Through four games, the Tar Heels sit at 2-2, with wins over Charlotte and Richmond but bad losses to TCU and UCF.

The lack of competitiveness against power-conference opposition has led many to wonder whether Belichick’s return to college football will be short-lived. However, Meyer dismissed talk of North Carolina pulling the plug anytime soon.

“First of all, it’s up to him,” Meyer said on The Triple Option podcast. “North Carolina is not going to fire Bill Belichick.”

Meyer points to the weight Belichick’s name carries. After 24 seasons and six Super Bowl wins with the New England Patriots, his hiring at UNC was less about short-term results and more about the credibility he brought to the program. According to Meyer, Belichick’s job security lies entirely in his own hands, regardless of early setbacks.

Belichick is among the wealthiest and most decorated coaches in football history, yet he seems increasingly irritable while holding a lucrative $10 million contract to coach a program that few others would have wanted to touch in the past at a traditional basketball school.

The road ahead doesn’t get easier. Next up is a matchup against Dabo Swinney’s struggling Clemson team, itself off to a 1-3 start. Both coaches enter under scrutiny, and the loser could face intensifying doubts about their ability to revive their programs in this new era. For now, though, Meyer believes Belichick has full control of his future at North Carolina, which separates the perception of his status from the reality of his results.
