UCLA reportedly plans to leave Rose Bowl for $5.5 billion stadium image

UCLA is finalizing a deal to move its football home games to SoFi Stadium beginning in 2026, according to a report by 247Sports

The agreement is described as a “near-done deal,” and would end the Bruins’ four-decade run at the Rose Bowl in Pasadena. The move is expected to be officially announced at the conclusion of the current season.

There are many seasons to promote the move, including financial incentives. UCLA believes that the revenue potential from premium seating, sponsorships, and luxury suites at SoFi Stadium far outweighs the financial benefits of remaining in Pasadena.

The university is preparing to buy out its lease with the City of Pasadena and the Rose Bowl Operating Company, which runs through June 2044. The buyout could cost between $60 million and $80 million, according to multiple estimates.

The City of Pasadena and the Rose Bowl Operating Company filed a lawsuit on Oct. 29 accusing UCLA of violating the spirit of its long-term agreement and warned that the university’s departure could result in more than $1 billion in damages.

SoFi Stadium is the home to the NFL’s Los Angeles Rams and Chargers, which opened in 2020 and seats 70,240. The venue is about 12 miles from UCLA’s Westwood campus, compared to 32 miles to the Rose Bowl.

UCLA has played at the Rose Bowl since 1982. During that time, the historic venue has played host to Super Bowls, World Cup soccer events, the 1984 Summer Olympics, and College Football Playoff games.
