Kickoff moved back 15 mins after Alabama-Missouri ran long on ABC
The talk around Texas Longhorns football feels much different a year after the Longhorns climbed to No. 1 in their debut Southeastern Conference season. For the first time in 40 years, they were the nation’s top-ranked team when they beat Oklahoma in the Red River Rivalry.
Now, Arch Manning and the Longhorns (3-2, 0-1 SEC) are unranked heading into Saturday’s annual clash at the Cotton Bowl, trying to salvage their season and keep slim College Football Playoff hopes alive. The Longhorns opened this season as the preseason No. 1, with Manning already viewed as a Heisman Trophy favorite before taking over full-time under center.
Meanwhile, No. 6 Oklahoma (5-0, 1-0) enters the State Fair of Texas with momentum and a ferocious defense. Coach Brent Venables’ Sooners, in their second SEC season, lead the nation by allowing just 193 total yards per game.
“For us, coming off last week in SEC play, stubbing our toe at Florida and starting off 0-1, this is a very significant game,” Texas coach Steve Sarkisian said. “You can feel that sense of urgency and intensity.”
Oklahoma could get a major boost with quarterback John Mateer, who was upgraded to probable Thursday after missing two games following hand surgery. The Washington State transfer has 1,215 passing yards, six touchdowns and five rushing scores in four games. Michael Hawkins Jr. filled in capably in last week’s 44-0 rout of Kent State.

Venables’ defense has been relentless, allowing opponents one yard or less on more than half of their offensive snaps and averaging 4.2 sacks per game — an issue for Texas after Manning was sacked six times in last week’s 29-21 loss at Florida.
This will be the 121st meeting between the rivals, played annually at Fair Park since 1929. Texas leads the series 64-51-5, but Oklahoma has won five of the past seven.
“In my opinion, it’s the best game in college football,” Sarkisian said.
