Syracuse Orange record-setting QB Kyle McCord gets brutal NFL roster news image

Kyle McCord did what he was supposed to do.

It wasn't enough, though, for the former Ohio State and Syracuse star quarterback.

He was released by the Philadelphia Eagles on Monday, according to NFL insider Jordan Schultz.

The Eagles simply didn't have room. Jalen Hurts was the unquestioned QB1. Tanner McKee had locked down the QB2 job.

And with McKee dinged up, the Eagles traded for Sam Howell on Sunday. He'll hold down the other quarterback spot for now.

That simply left no room for McCord.

Philadelphia had just chosen McCord in the sixth round of the NFL Draft in April, but he won't get a chance to suit up for Philly in the regular season, at least for now.

McCord had turned himself into an intriguing NFL quarterback in his lone season at Syracuse.

When he transferred in from Ohio State, there were questions of whether he'd just ridden the coattails of  his talented receviers.

But then at SU, McCord threw for 4,779 yard and 34 touchdowns, which are both single-season records for the Orange.

Yeah, he was the real deal.

McCord's college production, draft status and solid preseason performances likely will get him a chance somewhere. It'd be a surprise to see no one add him to a practice squad in the days ahead.

But he already got to learn what an NFL roster crunch feels like. Through no fault of McCord's own, he found himself on the outside looking in in Philadelphia.
