JUMP TO:

The Golden Egg Trophy will remain in Oxford for a third straight season. In one of the most highly anticipated Egg Bowls in recent years due to the drama surrounding head coach Lane Kiffin, Ole Miss won handily, 38-19.

The star of the day was unquestionably Ole Miss quarterback Trinidad Chambliss, who finished 22-of-33 for 359 yards with a season-high four touchdown passes. Although Bulldog quarterback Kamario Taylor — making his first-ever start at Mississippi State — played well, Ole Miss’ offense controlled the game in Starkville.

Despite a first-half scuffle that resulted in two personal foul penalties, the rivalry was relatively civil Friday afternoon. With Ole Miss’ victory, the Rebels have now reached 11 wins in the regular season for the first time in school history.

Ole Miss also clinched a playoff berth, and the Rebels appear on track to both host and play in a College Football Playoff game for the first time. If Texas A&M and Alabama also lose this weekend, the Rebels have a chance to play in the SEC title game for the first time.

The credit for this season and Ole Miss’ recent success largely goes to head coach Lane Kiffin. The big question now is what he will do next. There have been numerous rumors surrounding his future, with reports suggesting he will either go to LSU or remain in Oxford. During the game Friday, reports surfaced that Florida had moved on from Kiffin.

There is also uncertainty about what it means for Ole Miss’ playoff hopes and whether Kiffin would coach the team during the CFP if he takes the LSU job.

On Friday afternoon, though, Ole Miss’ focus was on the Egg Bowl. The Rebels were locked in and took care of business against their biggest rival. Now, they will go to the CFP for the first time in school history. Kudos to Kiffin for getting his team focused to win big on the road in the Egg Bowl, despite all the off-field drama.

1:28 p.m. — Oh man, Ole Miss looked like it was about to have its punt recovered on the 1, but it takes a weird bounce and results in an MSU touchback instead.

1:25 p.m. — Fumble overturned: Officials have concluded that Chambliss' arm was going forward on the play, making it an incomplete pass. For the scuffling, officials gave personal fouls to both players that offset, with no ejections. Kudos to Mississippi State's PA announcer for his incredible song choice during the scuffle:

the stadium DJ hitting Knuck if You Buck mid-fight is incredible work. You spend all season working to be prepared for that moment

You can see how much this rivalry means though, folks, what a game!

1:21 p.m. —FUMBLE! Trinidad Chambliss appears to have the ball stripped, and Mississippi State recovers. After the play, an Ole Miss players hand got caught in a MSU player's facemask and things got pretty chippy.

Refs are looking at the play to see if it's an incomplete pass, though.

1:15 p.m.— Ole Miss looks to get back on track on offense here, getting the ball back with just over seven minutes left before halftime. Let's see if Chambliss can get things rolling, as the Rebels could use points here to take momentum going into halftime.

1:02 p.m. — Both defenses have settled in here, as Ole Miss forced a MSU three-and-out. The Bulldogs forces another Ole Miss three-and-out, as Trinidad Chambliss has missed on his last six straight throws.

12:55 p.m.— Unable to capitalize on the momentum from the turnover, Ole Mis goes three-and-out with three straight incompletions from Trinidad Chambliss.

12:53 p.m.—Interception: And Ole Miss gets the ball right back! Kemario Taylor has his pass tipped, and it's picked off by Ole Miss' Princewell Umanmielen to get Ole Miss' offense back out there.

End of 1st quarter: Ole Miss 14, Mississippi State 7

12:44 p.m. — Ole Miss goes for it on 4th-and-2, and Kewan Lacy gets nine yards and a first down. Ole Miss is in the red zone threatening to score at the end of the first quarter

12:36 p.m. — Nice to see Ole Miss' defense finally come alive! The Rebels force a MSU punt to give Ole Miss the ball back at their own 22.

Ole Miss 14, Mississippi State 7

12:33 p.m.—TOUCHDOWN: Defense appears to be optional in this one, folks. Trinidad Chambliss hit Harrison Wallace III for a 24-yard touchdown pass to give Ole Miss the lead right back.

We're in for a fun one in Starkville, folks!

Ole Miss 7, Mississippi State 7

12:22 p.m.—TOUCHDOWN: And Mississippi State fires right back! Kamario Taylor scores a 33-yard touchdown to even things up here in Starkville.

Before the game, MSU made a quarterback change from Blake Shapen to Taylor, who is making his first career start for the Bulldogs. He's off to a great start, so far!

Ole Miss 7, Mississippi State 0

12:12 p.m.—TOUCHDOWN:  Well, this was quick. Kewan Lacy takes it in for a 31-yard touchdown to give the Rebels a 7-0 lead:

12:11 p.m.: We have kickoff! Ole Miss gets the ball first here, and has a nice drive going early.

11:15 a.m.:  Kiffin is a serial tweeter. Here's a picture of his wee lad holding an ESPN mic before today's fixture.

10:45 a.m.:  The Rebels have already faced a little adversity ahead of today's match. Kiffin told reporters that Mississippi State fans broke into the Rebels' locker room and swiped Trinidad Chambliss' jersey.

10:40 a.m.:  The Bulldogs will be buoyed by the return of star safety Isaac Smith. The second-team All-SEC standout was recently felled by a lower body injury. However, he'll be back on the field come Friday.

10:30 a.m.:  It's business as usual for Kiffin as he makes his way to Davis Wade Stadium for today's bout.

10:15 a.m.:  All eyes are on Lane Kiffin for this one. The Rebels coach has seen his name float in the coaching carousel throughout the past few weeks, with both Florida and LSU linked with the 50-year-old taskmaster. He and his Ole Miss side get a chance to joust with the Bulldogs before a raucous Mississippi State crowd in less than two hours.
