The most prolific tight end so far in college football was a linebacker until this season.
In fact, Oklahoma's Jaren Kanak had spent all three of his college seasons with the Sooners on the defensive side of the football.
He was pretty good, too. He went from 23 tackles in his first year to a strong 62 tackles with two sacks in 2023.
Kanak made just 17 tackles last fall, and for this season, he made a position change.
So far, it looks brilliant.
Kanak has 14 catches for 245 yards in Oklahoma's fast start to the season.
Somehow, he hasn't found the end zone, but that seems like it has to be coming.
Of all the players that Pro Football Focus classifies as a tight end, not a single one has as many receiving yards as Kanak.
It's a wild shift to a career in Norman.
Kanak is 6-foot-2 and 233 pounds, always a great athlete.
In high school in Hays, Kansas, he was actually a quarterback who ran for 1,615 yards as a senior (and threw for 910 in a run-heavy scheme). Clearly, he can do good things with the football in his hands.
But it never looked like he'd get that chance again, until this fall.
And now Kanak is one of the best tight ends in the country. Better late than never.
