Oklahoma State set to hire UNT's Eric Morris as next head coach image

Eric Morris has accepted the job as Oklahoma State’s next head football coach and will take over the Cowboys program after the 2025 season, according to a report from ESPN’s Pete Thame l on Tuesday afternoon. Morris is currently leading North Texas to a 10-1 record in what is being billed as the best season in Mean Green history and one that has kept them in the conversation for a spot in the expanded College Football Playoff.

Oklahoma State hires away UNT football coach Eric Morris as head coach.

Thamel reported that Morris has agreed to become Oklahoma State’s next head coach, ending the Cowboys’ search that began after the dismissal of longtime coach Mike Gundy earlier this season. Terms of Morris’ contract at Oklahoma State were not immediately available as of Tuesday afternoon.

Despite accepting the job in Stillwater, Morris is expected to remain on the sideline at North Texas through the end of the regular season and for any potential postseason appearances. That includes a possible trip to the American Athletic Conference championship game and an opportunity to secure a berth in the 12-team College Football Playoff if results break the Mean Green’s way.

In his third season in Denton, Morris has guided North Texas to a 10-1 mark, the program’s first double-digit win campaign at the FBS level. The Mean Green’s surge has pushed them into national relevance after entering the year as a Group of Five sleeper and steadily climbing into playoff contention behind one of the nation’s most productive offenses.

North Texas administrators and boosters had been preparing for the possibility of losing Morris as his profile rose during this run. A formal coaching search is underway in Denton.
