Former Dallas Cowboys tight end Jason Witten is expected to be hired by Oklahoma Sooners for its open tight ends coaching position, according to On3’s Pete Nakos.
The move would mark Witten’s first college coaching role after five seasons as head coach at Liberty Christian School in Argyle, Texas. A 17-year NFL veteran most notably with the Dallas Cowboys and Witten took over the LCS program in 2021. After starting 2-8 in his first season, Witten guided the Warriors to a 44-7 record over the past four years, winning state championships in 2023 and 2024.
Witten’s sons have played key roles in that success. CJ Witten is now at Rice Owls, while Cooper Witten is regarded as one of the top linebackers in the 2027 recruiting class, with Oklahoma viewed as a strong contender.

A former Tennessee standout, Witten was a two-time first-team All-Pro, an 11-time Pro Bowl selection and the NFL’s 2012 Walter Payton Man of the Year. He is the Cowboys’ all-time leader in receptions, receiving yards and games played, and was recently named a finalist for the 2026 Pro Football Hall of Fame class.
Oklahoma is coming off a College Football Playoff season in 2025. Brent Venables is reshaping the Sooners tight end room after recently firing Joe Jon Finley, who coached the position since 2021.
