If there was one benefit to the pandemic-altered schedule that Power 5 conferences had to adopt, it was the ACC agreeing to let Notre Dame temporarily become a member, ensuring a matchup with Clemson.

The Irish (6-0) are ranked No. 4 in the country and right on the bubble of the College Football Playoff for the first time since 2018 when Clemson walloped Notre Dame 30-3 in the semifinals. Typically an independent, the Irish have navigated their ACC schedule with ease, winning all but one of their games by multiple possessions. Despite its success, Notre Dame and Ian Book haven't been able to get the passing game going this year, averaging just 206 yards a game, only better than three other teams in the conference.

Instead the Irish have relied on a conference-leading defense that allows both the fewest points and fewest yards in the ACC. Notre Dame has given up just two touchdowns in its last three games and has held opponents to fewer than 335 yards of offense in five of six games.

The obvious big news for No. 1 Clemson is that it will be without presumed No. 1 pick in the upcoming NFL draft, Trevor Lawrence. Lawrence is still recovering from a positive COVID-19 test for the second straight game, forcing freshman D.J. Uiagalelei under center. Uiagalelei was one of the nation's top recruits and performed well in his first college start against Boston College last weekend, throwing for 342 yards and two touchdowns to go with 25 yards on the ground and another score.

Regardless of the outcome of this game, both teams are likely to play each other again in December's ACC Championship. The Irish bring in the nation's longest winning streak at 12 games and are 8-16-1 all-time against No. 1 ranked teams.
