North Texas quarterback Drew Mestemaker, the nation’s top passer this season, is expected to enter the transfer portal, according to multiple reports.
Mestemaker threw for an FBS-leading 4,129 yards and 31 touchdowns in 12 games while completing 70.2% of his passes, emerging as one of the most productive quarterbacks in the country as a redshirt freshman. He added seven interceptions and was named the American Athletic Conference offensive player of the year after guiding the Mean Green through a breakout season.
A former walk-on from Austin, Texas, Mestemaker appeared in five games as a true freshman before taking over as the starter this fall.
The 6-foot-4, 210-pound quarterback quickly became one of college football’s most efficient passers, setting multiple North Texas single-season passing records. He is one of only five freshmen in FBS history to surpass 4,000 passing yards.
Mestemaker’s decision comes shortly after head coach Eric Morris left North Texas for Oklahoma State. The Cowboys are considered a strong contender to pursue Mestemaker once he officially enters the portal.
With three years of eligibility remaining, Mestemaker instantly becomes one of the most coveted quarterbacks available. His entry further deepens a transfer market already headlined by Nebraska’s Dylan Raiola, Florida’s DJ Lagway, Cincinnati’s Brendan Sorsby and Michigan State’s Aidan Chiles.
The transfer portal does not officially open until Jan. 2, and more high-profile quarterbacks are expected to follow in the coming weeks.
