Mid-season grades for college football's heavyweights at quarterback image

Week 6 of the college football schedule features some heavyweights at the quarterback position. Who was the best of the bunch and who is turning heads good or bad?

There are a few unsung heroes who have been putting in work with less on the roster. Luke Altmyer, CJ Bailey, Dylan Raiola, Joey Aguilar and Diego Pavia won't get the recognition they deserve despite being statistically better than most of the quarterbacks on this list. John Mateer and LaNorris Sellars have missed time due to injury.

Must watch TV is what these quarterbacks have been thus far into the season. These are some of the hottest QBs in the nation in non-pass happy air raid offenses.

Carson Beck

Carson Beck (Miami): More Gino Torretta than Ken Dorsey, Beck is leading the Miami Hurricanes back to national prominence.

Grade: A

Last Game: #3 Miami v. #18 Florida State 28-22

QB Rating (197.9), Beck was named ACC Player of the Week and Panini Senior Bowl offensive player of the week. Eclipsing the 70% completion mark for the third time this season on 20 of 27 passes for 241 yards, four touchdowns and no picks.

Dante Moore Oregon 090425

Dante Moore (Oregon): Hype machine be damned, the Ducks are flying high largely due to the play of Moore. A week off sets up a huge showdown with Indiana.

Grade: A-

Last Game: #6 Oregon v. #3 Penn State 30-24

QB Rating (153.2), Moore lead his team over the Nittany Lions in a double overtime thriller.

Throwing for 248 yards and 3 touchdowns while adding 35 yards rushing on 10 carries.

Solid numbers against Penn State, but doing it under the bright lights is extra special.

Honorable Mentions

Fernando Mendoza

Fernando Mendoza (Indiana): Mendoza may have cooled off and came back to earth against Iowa, but the next real test is #3 Oregon in a battle of the unbeatens.

Grade: A-

Last Game: #11 Indiana v. Iowa 20-15

QB Rating (161.6), Mendoza’s most sub-par passing performance of the season 233 yards passing, two touchdowns, one interception and his first quarterback rating below 200 points on the season.

Jayden Maiava

Jayden Maiava (USC): Throwing to Ja’Kobi Lane and Makai Lemon is a tough gig but Maiava has been doing it well. Tougher defenses are on the horizon as #15 Michigan is up next and #16 Notre Dame is right behind them.

Grade: B+

Last Game: #21 USC vs #23 Illinois 32-34

QB Rating: (151.6) 30/43 364 yards two touchdowns and an interception

The "thanks for playing" contestants

Drew Allar (Penn State): Really bro? You really lost to winless dumpster fire UCLA?

Last Game: #7 Penn St v. UCLA 37-42

Grade: C

Allar threw for two touchdowns of 40 and 15 yards, 200 yards passing and added 78 yards rushing on 11 attempts. Efficiently underwhelming numbers against a team which had been a punching bag.

Brian Kelly and Garrett Nussmeier

Garrett Nussmeier (LSU): The bayou tigers are cursed and Nussmeier can't seem to find a way to win the big games. An extra week to process the loss should get them right for Vanderbilt.

Last Game: #4 LSU v. #13 Ole Miss 19-24

Grade: C

Nussmeier’s 197 yards passing, a touchdown and interception, while averaging a measly 5.8 yards per completion is unbecoming of 34 attempts. Performances like these slide his draft stock further and further away from the first round.

Arch Manning Texas 082925

Arch Manning (Texas): The nephew of Peyton and Eli is getting crossed off the list as draft eligible. He' hasn’t lived up to the hype and needs to go back and start for at least another year.

Grade: D

Last Game: #9 Texas v. Florida 21-29

Arch completed 16 of 29 passes for 263 yards, two touchdowns, two interceptions and 37 yards rushing on 15 attempts.
