There were a few heroes for the Miami Hurricanes in their first-ever College Football Playoff win on Saturday.
Wide receiver Malachi Toney scored the game-winning touchdown, overcoming an earlier fumble against Texas A&M. Kicker Carter Davis rebounded from three misses to drill a key second-half field goal. Freshman safety Bryce Fitzgerald added two interceptions, including the game-sealing pick of Aggies quarterback Marcel Reed.
However, Miami’s win also may not have happened without lead running back Mark Fletcher Jr. Neither offense found much rhythm in the first-round CFP game, yet Fletcher carried the Hurricanes’ ground attack and helped set up the game-winning score.
Here’s a look at Mark Fletcher Jr.’s huge day against Texas A&M in the first round of the CFP.

Mark Fletcher stats vs. Texas A&M
- Carries: 17
- Rushing Yards: 172
- YPC: 10.1
- TDs: 0
Fletcher didn't find the end zone against Texas A&M, but it wasn't a game where that was ever really possible. The Hurricanes and Aggies were locked into a defensive battle, with the matchup becoming the first-ever CFP game to be 0-0 at halftime.
Miami managed just 12 first downs, 103 passing yards and three third-down conversions against Texas A&M, but with Mario Cristobal's defense playing well, Fletcher's performance on the ground was enough to get the win. He was, by far, the most reliable Miami offensive player on Saturday, out-gaining his team's entire passing offense for 172 rushing yards.
One big play helped boost his numbers a bit, but Fletcher was the answer for Miami's offense against a stout Texas A&M defense. The running back, who came in with 685 rushing yards on the season, blew past his previous season-high of 120 rushing yards.
According to OptaStats, Fletcher had 61.9% (172/278) of Miami’s scrimmage yards in the win over Texas A&M, becoming the first player to ever total at least 60% of his team's scrimmage yards in a College Football Playoff game.

Toney's run to the end zone was technically the game-winning play for Miami on Saturday, but it would not have happened without Fletcher.
On the first play of a fourth-quarter drive that began with 2:18 left in the game, still tied at three points, Fletcher ripped through the Texas A&M defense for a 56-yard run, which pushed the Hurricanes into Aggies territory and allowed them to burn some clock before Toney's touchdown.

With the kind of tackle-breaking ability and quick feet he displayed on the game-swinging play, Fletcher even drew some Marshawn Lynch "Beast Quake" comparisons on social media.

Mark Fletcher’s family
Fletcher has opened up about his family before, telling the Sun Sentinel in September that his father, Mark Sr., died at just 53 years old two days before the Miami vs. Florida State matchup in 2024.
The running back scored in that game, days after his father's death.
“I miss him every single day,” Fletcher Jr. Said, per the Sun Sentinel. “But just the way he left his legacy, I just have nothing to do but just carry it in the best way, and that’s what I plan to do.”
“I was emotional that whole day, but then when I saw [my teammates], that’s when I really broke down.... You could ask some players from the team last year. I really broke down. Just threw my shades on, and I was just trying to push through that service."
Fletcher Jr.'s mother has also been a huge supporter of his, as earlier in the 2025 season, a post was shared that she has driven to every single one of Mark's games in his collegiate career.
