Oklahoma vs Alabama Game Preview: 

This game represents the same goal for both teams, with very different paths. Oklahoma is playing for their playoff lives while Alabama just has to keep doing what they’ve been doing. This game for Oklahoma caps a three-game streak of nationally ranked SEC opponents.

With a win today, Oklahoma could move into an overall record tie with Alabama and possibly move up in the standings if Georgia beats Texas later today. If Alabama wins they remain on their current collision course with Texas A&M (provided the Aggies beat South Carolina).

On paper, this should be Alabama’s game to lose. However, the Alabama defense this season has consistently struggled against one thing. Mobile quarterbacks. Crimson Tide fans might even consider this a revenge game after Oklahoma beat them last season and effectively knocked them out of the playoff.

One of the matchups to keep an eye on is Oklahoma quarterback John Mateer and the Alabama linebackers. If Oklahoma is going to win this game, one has to believe a big part of that will come from Mateer’s legs. Mateer has not had a dominant passing game since the first conference game vs Auburn (271 yards on 67%). However, in his last game vs Tennessee, Mateer rushed for 80 yards and a touchdown.

Another matchup to watch for is the Oklahoma pass rush vs the Alabama offensive line. Oklahoma will need to find ways to disrupt the Alabama passing game. Brent Venables’ Sooners blitz the fourth most among all Power 4 teams. Alabama has the 7th best pass blocking offensive line in the nation. As well as being the 4th best team in the nation against the blitz.

The result of this game will either get Alabama one step closer to the SEC title game or Oklahoma will still have playoff life heading into the final stretch.
