Joey Aguilar stats today: Tennessee QB has uneven performance vs. Georgia image

One of the biggest games of Week 3 was in Knoxville, Tenn., as the No. 6 Georgia Bulldogs took on the No. 15 Tennessee Volunteers. The game was an absolute thriller, going into overtime tied at 38-all. Tennessee had a chance to make a 42-yard game-winning field goal, but kicker Max Gilbert missed it wide right.

Georgia ended up prevailing 44-41 in overtime, scoring a touchdown in response to Tennessee's field goal in OT.

One player making his first big start on Saturday was Vols starting quarterback Joey Aguilar. The former App State and JUCO signal-caller had a solid day against Georgia's defense, finishing with over 300 yards passing, four touchdowns and two interceptions.

Here's a look at Aguilar's stats against Georgia.

Aguilar did have a pair of interceptions, but over 400 yards passing, so it was a mixed outing overall:

  • Completions: 24
  • Attempts: 36
  • Passing Yards: 371
  • Passing TDs: 4
  • Rush Yards: -8
  • Rushing TDs: 1

In the first quarter, Aguilar went a perfect 16-for-16 passing, the first time an SEC quarterback has done that over the past two decades.

Aguilar's interception came on a bad throw, and an even better read by the Georgia defensive back:

Joey Aguilar highlights

Tennessee's first touchdown of the game came on a four-yard rush from Aguilar:

Following a quick response from Georgia quarterback Gunnar Stockton, who rushed it in for his own score, Aguilar went right back to work. On second down, Aguilar hit his receiver Chris Brazzell for a 72-yard catch:

His third touchdown of the first half was a quick 14-yard score also thrown to Brazzell,

At the end of the third quarter, Aguilar hit Brazzell for a 56-yard touchdown:

In the fourth quarter, he hit Braylon Staley for a 32-yard touchdown pass, his fourth passing touchdown of the day:

In overtime on Tennessee's first possession, Aguilar had three straight incompletions, which cause the Vols to have to settle for a field goal.

All in all, the game wasn't necessarily lost by Aguilar, but the Vols could have scored a touchdown in overtime to make the game go into a second OT.

Tennessee is not out of the playoff of SEC title hunt by any means, so Aguilar isn't going away. He still had a solid performance by against Georgia, even in a loss.
