James Franklin's first Virginia Tech recruit predicted to be a big one image

New Virginia Tech coach James Franklin may be only days into his tenure, but his first potential recruiting splash is already taking shape.

San Marcos (Calif.) Mission Hills four-star quarterback Troy Huhn, who's the nation’s No. 20 passer, told Rivals this week he is strongly considering the Hokies following Franklin’s move to Blacksburg.

Huhn was previously committed to Franklin at Penn State and could be on the move again, saying the coaching change “impacts my recruitment a lot.”

“I have always been a supporter of Coach Franklin and have always wanted to play for him,” Huhn told Rivals. “I know that with him finding a landing spot at Virginia Tech it will be a strong interest.”

Huhn, a 6-foot-4, 220-pound senior, completed more than 72 percent of his passes for 1,262 yards and two interceptions in six games this season. He also rushed for 217 yards and five touchdowns.

Virginia Tech could emerge to the front of the line, but Huhn is also drawing recent interest from Stanford, Minnesota, and others.

Franklin was announced as the Hokies’ next head coach on Monday, called the opportunity “an honor,” vowing to restore “unmatched excellence” to the program.

The former Penn State leader won a Big Ten title and guided the Nittany Lions to their first College Football Playoff appearance in 2024 before being dismissed in October.

Huhn said he is working to schedule a visit to Blacksburg soon. “Finding a coach like that is hard,” he said. “He has always been there for me.”
