Georgia Tech landed quarterback Alberto Mendoza just hours after Indiana wrapped up a historic national championship run, giving the Yellow Jackets a key late addition from the transfer portal, according to CBS Sports' Matt Zenith and Chris Hummer.

Mendoza, the younger brother of Heisman Trophy winner Fernando Mendoza, is moving on from the CFP champions with three years of eligibility remaining. The 6-foot-2, 205-pound redshirt freshman visited Georgia Tech on Tuesday and wasted no time.

The connection between Mendoza and Georgia Tech traces back to earlier this month. His former offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach at Indiana was Tino Sunseri, the older brother of current Yellow Jackets safeties coach Vinnie Sunseri. The relationship that helped put Atlanta firmly on Mendoza’s radar, according to On3

Mendoza appeared in nine games this season for the Hoosiers, completing 75% of his passes for 286 yards with five touchdowns and one interception. He also showcased his mobility, rushing for 190 yards and scoring six total touchdowns.

His departure was expected after Indiana signed TCU transfer Josh Hoover, a 31-game starter who has thrown for more than 9,600 career yards. The addition crowded an already competitive quarterback room in Bloomington.

Duke, FSU and Stanford also contacted Mendoza’s representatives Tuesday, according to reports. However, Duke’s pursuit is complicated by its ongoing lawsuit involving quarterback Darian Mensah.

Mendoza should have a clear path to compete for a starting job in the ACC in 2026.
