The 2025 season has marked a sensational and historic start for the No. 12 Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets, who are currently undefeated at 6-0 (3-0 ACC) for the first time since 2011.

Quarterback Haynes King is the engine of this resurgence, validating his status as one of the ACC’s most valuable players. The dual-threat senior is excelling in Brent Key’s offense, proving to be a true conversion machine, particularly on the ground. Through the first six games, King leads all non–service academy FBS quarterbacks in rushing yards per game.

King is in his sixth and final season of college football after spending three years at Texas A&M before joining the Yellow Jackets in 2023. Here’s more on his age and eligibility status in 2025.

How old is Haynes King?

King is 24 years old. He was born on January 9, 2001.

King entered college as one of the most highly-rated quarterback prospects in the nation, committing to the Texas A&M Aggies as a consensus four-star recruit in the Class of 2020. Hailing from Longview, Texas, King was ranked as the No. 3 dual-threat quarterback nationally by major recruiting services. His recruitment was highly competitive, as he fielded offers from football powerhouses like LSU, Auburn, Tennessee, and Oregon, ultimately choosing Texas A&M largely due to the reputation of then-head coach Jimbo Fisher as a quarterback developer.

Haynes King college eligibility

King began his career at Texas A&M in 2020. Since the 2020 season did not count toward eligibility due to the COVID-19 pandemic, King effectively played three seasons (2020, 2021, and 2022) while only using one year of eligibility. He then transferred to Georgia Tech in 2023 and played a full season, followed by another full season in 2024.

Currently in his third season at Georgia Tech, King is technically classified as a Senior on the roster, but he is actually playing his sixth year of college football. The 2025 season is his final year of collegiate eligibility.

Haynes King transfer timeline

Texas A&M

King spent three years at Texas A&M, appearing in just 10 games over that span. While he secured the starting job twice with the Aggies, severe leg and shoulder injuries in consecutive seasons (2021 and 2022) curtailed his development and caused him to lose his starting role.

His eventual transfer to Georgia Tech in 2023 was influenced by his connection with Yellow Jackets co-offensive coordinator Chris Weinke, who had initially recruited King to Tennessee.

Georgia Tech

Since becoming the starting quarterback at Georgia Tech, King has been a revelation. In 2024, he set the ACC single-season record with a 72.9% completion rate. By Week 7 of 2025, King has thrown for 971 yards and four touchdowns while adding 440 rushing yards and nine touchdowns on the ground. The dual-threat quarterback has driven Georgia Tech to its best start in over a decade and positioned the Yellow Jackets as serious contenders in the ACC.

King has led Georgia Tech to wins over Colorado, No. 12 Clemson, and Wake Forest as part of an undefeated start to the 2025 season. In 2024, the Yellow Jackets notched two top-10 victories over No. 10 Florida State and No. 4 Miami. They also nearly upset No. 8 Georgia in Athens, losing in eight overtimes.
