Oklahoma remains firmly in the College Football Playoff hunt, but ESPN analyst Greg McElroy says the Sooners’ offensive struggles could derail their postseason hopes.
On his Always College Football show, McElroy identified Oklahoma as a contender facing significant hardship. An offense that has yet to match the program’s typically explosive standard.
“Given the talent of their quarterback and wide receiver core, they have got to be better on that side of the ball because they’ll be one and done in the postseason if they can’t manufacture more points,” McElroy said. He added that a potential matchup with Notre Dame would require Oklahoma to “manufacture some offense” to keep pace.
Oklahoma’s 17-6 win over Missouri last week did little to calm concerns in Norman. The Sooners had just 276 total yards and went 6-for-16 on third down, again leaning on their elite defense to secure the victory.
Quarterback John Mateer threw two touchdowns but completed only 14-of-30 passes. This comes weeks after hand surgery and still not being fully healed.
Oklahoma hosts LSU on Saturday needing another tune up.
