DeSean Jackson may have earned a win, but his focus after the game was firmly on the details that still need fixing.
“Always love when you get a dub on a on a scoreboard or on the victory side on the column,” Jackson said. “But…I just just feel like, man, we’re we’re not playing complimentary football. We’re not playing disciplined football. And…we can get by on certain teams, but, you know, it’s going to come a point in time where, we can’t continue to make those mistakes and keep affecting us.”
Jackson admitted the repeated mistakes have tested his patience. “It’s extremely frustrating, man…I can’t continue to allow those mistakes as a head coach…it’s hard enough to win, right? So, when you’re continuously making bonehead mistakes, putting your mind in however you’re feeling in that moment, you know, against the team is not good ball.”
Still, Delaware State in its 36-14 victory had two standout performances on offense. Quarterback Kaiden Bennett delivered a dual-threat effort, going 17-of-29 for 179 yards and two touchdowns through the air, while adding 36 rushing yards and another score. Running back James Jones powered the ground game with 100 yards on just eight carries, averaging 12.5 yards every time he touched the ball.

Despite the production, Jackson wasn’t satisfied. “36 points, I feel like we should have scored 50 points in the first half, right? I think we should have came out again and scored another 30 plus. But, you know, we just continuously kept making mistakes, bonehead mistakes. And it’s like I said, as a coach, and that’s my job here to do, I’m going to make sure we clean it up.”
The coach’s frustration grew when asked about sideline issues. “It’s selfishness, man. …We just got guys that are talking back and, you know, think they’re bigger than the program. …There may be a few guys being kicked off this team, man, cuz at the end of the day, we can’t have that to go where we need to go.”
Even as he raised concerns, Jackson reminded everyone of the bigger picture. “The expectations and the standard are very high…I will continuously uphold that, including myself coaches and the players. And we just got to do a better job of holding everybody accountable. If everybody holds themselves to that standard, we’ll have a lot of success this season.”
Next up, Delaware State (2-1) travels to face winless Saint Francis (0-3). The Red Flash are coached by former NFL offensive lineman Chris Villarrial, who has led the program since 2010. Earlier this year, the school announced that it will transition out of Division I FCS and move to Division III beginning in 2026. For Jackson’s Hornets, the matchup provides a prime opportunity to tighten execution and push their record to 3-1.
