College Football Playoff Rankings: Comparing Texas and Alabama's CFP resumes image

Heading into championship weekend, Alabama had a chance to cement its spot in the College Football Playoff against Georgia.

Instead, the Crimson Tide fell flat in a 28-7 loss to the Bulldogs, failing to secure the automatic bid. In the process, Alabama also put its at-large status at serious risk, as the team added its third loss of the year with Saturday’s result.

When the committee discusses who belongs in the Playoff, it will see that Alabama’s resume is similar to that of a different SEC team: Texas. The 9-3 Longhorns appear on the outside looking in this year, but Alabama’s loss may have invigorated its chances.

Here’s a breakdown of how Alabama compares to Texas.

Alabama vs. Texas resume comparison

With Alabama's loss to Georgia in the SEC Championship game, the Crimson Tide's resume looks very similar to that of Texas.

The Longhorns ended the season with a 9-3 record, having played five teams currently in the top 25. Texas went 3-2 in those games, falling to playoff-bound squads Ohio State and Georgia, but also has a loss to lowly Florida.

Now, Alabama also has three losses on the year, with two losses to top-10 teams, Oklahoma and Georgia, and one bad loss to Florida State. While the Crimson Tide have 10 wins to Texas’ nine, they only have two wins against current top-25 teams, having beaten Georgia and Vanderbilt.

Therefore, the Tide and Longhorns have very similar cases. Since Alabama earned the right to play in the SEC Championship game, it could have the edge over Texas if the final spot comes down to those two teams, which it feels as though it may.

Of course, it's possible that the committee just puts Miami and Notre Dame in the Playoff, leaving both Texas and Alabama out. Both the Hurricanes and Fighting Irish are ranked in the same area as the Crimson Tide, but at 10-2, their resumes may now look better than Alabama’s.
