Carnell Tate injury update: Ohio State WR misses second straight game with unspecified ailment image

Ohio State will be without one of its top wide receivers when it faces UCLA on Saturday evening.

Carnell Tate, the Buckeyes' second-leading receiver, is set to miss his second straight game. The junior was sidelined by injury last week, and a week of rest hasn’t eased his ailment—though he isn’t expected to miss much more time.

Here’s what you need to know about Tate’s injury and his status going forward.

Carnell Tate injury update

Tate was ruled out Saturday's game vs. The Bruins with an undisclosed injury, according to ESPN's Pete Thamel. The issue springs from an ailment suffered during last week's game against Purdue. Per Thamel, the issue emerged during warmups last week. It isn't considered too serious, with Tate expected to return to action before long.

"Carnell, we felt like he was gonna be OK to play, but when he went through warm-ups, he just felt something there, so we just wanted to be really careful," head coach Ryan Day said postgame. "Could he have played? Yeah, probably. But we’re just gonna rest him to make sure."

Tate is dealing with a calf injury, per On3's Pete Nakos.

The junior pass-catcher is the Buckeyes' second-leading receiver, fielding 39 catches for 711 yards and seven scores in eight games. He's proven one of the country's best speed threats, averaging more than 18 yards a catch.

1Jeremiah Smith
2Carnell Tate
3Brandon Inniss

Tate makes up one of college football's most captivating wide receiver tandems, pairing nicely with lead wideout Jeremiah Smith. The two have combined for nearly 1,600 yards and 17 touchdowns thus far.

In Tate's absence, expect junior wideout Brandon Inniss to receive increased snaps. A former five-star prospect out of American Heritage (Fla.), Inniss played sparingly across his first two seasons. He has shown more explosiveness as a junior, already recording more receiving yards (180) than he did in either of his first two years.
