BYU's talented four-star quarterback commit Ryder Lyons would've been expected to sign with the Cougars on Wednesday's national early signing day.

Plot twist.

Lyons won't be signing on Wednesday, according to Rivals.

"Another elite prospect on the West Coast is waiting to sign, it appears," Rivals' Keegan Pope writes. "According to Rivals’ Adam Gorney, BYU 4-star QB commit Ryder Lyons will not sign on Wednesday. Lyons, the nation’s No. 5 quarterback, has been committed to the Cougars since June. He plans to take an LDS mission trip after graduating this month and doesn’t have to sign during the Early Signing Period."

It was a huge pull by the Cougars to land the No. 5 quarterback in the country.

BYU seems to still have a good chance here, and there could be a number of reasons for the delay. But it's certainly not as positive a development as Lyons putting pen to paper and actually signing.

Lyons is a prolific passer at Folsom High School in California.

The four-star recruit is listed at 6-foot-2, 200 pounds.

Lyons had offers from tons of major programs, including Ohio State, USC, Oregon, Ole Miss, Alabama, Michigan, Georgia, Florida, Notre Dame and Auburn.

Fans of some of those programs may start to wonder whether Lyons is flippable.

For now, all that seems clear is that Lyons' final commitment via signing will wait.
