Freeze praises Sooners’ defense, highlights QB John Mateer, and hints at deeper passing attack
Auburn’s SEC opener isn’t just another game, it’s a measuring stick. No. 22 Auburn travels to Norman to take on No. 11 Oklahoma in a matchup that has both playoff implications and national intrigue. Hugh Freeze didn’t hold back this week when sizing up the Sooners.
Freeze zeroed in on Oklahoma’s defense, a unit that has allowed just one touchdown all season. “They’re very stingy, very physical,” Freeze said. He pointed to Brent Venables’ leadership and talent across the board, even suggesting Oklahoma belongs “in the playoff discussions.” For Auburn, that means Saturday brings one of the toughest defenses they’ll see all year.
The head coach also spotlighted Oklahoma quarterback John Mateer. “He is their go-to guy in critical downs,” Freeze said. Mateer’s mix of speed, arm strength, and command has Freeze convinced Auburn’s defense must be ready for a four-quarter battle.
Finally, Freeze addressed his own offense. Auburn has leaned on balance, but he made it clear he wants to stretch the field more. “I’d like to throw it deep more,” Freeze admitted, saying his receivers have the skill to make those plays count.
Freeze knows what’s at stake. Auburn has a chance to prove it belongs in the upper tier of the SEC, if it can handle Oklahoma’s physical defense and contain Mateer. The stage is set.
