JUMP TO:

Arch Manning and 3-2 Texas faced the closest thing to a must-win against No. 6 Oklahoma, and while he didn’t light up the Cotton Bowl, he did enough to get the win.

Behind the Texas defense’s stellar effort — limiting John Mateer and Oklahoma to six points the entire game -- Manning and the Longhorns beat the Sooners 23-6 on Saturday afternoon to advance to 4-2 and 1-1 in SEC play.

Manning was efficient, completing 21-of-27 passes for 166 yards and a touchdown. The lone score was when Texas took a 10-6 lead after Manning hit his receiver for 12 yards and never gave it back.

Texas, who came into the game with losses to No. 3 Ohio State and Florida, needed improvements on both sides of the ball and got it. Manning played turnover free football and the Longhorns were efficient on third down, finishing 9-for-16 on the day.

How did Arch Manning do today?

Oklahoma scored the first six points of the game, and from that point on it was all Texas. The Longhorns offense outgunned the Sooners 302 to 250 8hile turning the ball over zero times to Oklahoma’s 3.

Manning had one of his highest completion percentages of the season against an Oklahoma defense that averaged under 10 points per game against — one of the best in America — entering the game.

His most impressive drive was a 14-play, 75-yarder to open the second half that ended in the touchdown to Moore Jr to take the lead.

Texas was also helped by a strong rushing game, with Tre Wisner leading the way. The running back who returned last week against Florida had 94 rushing yards as the Longhorns outran the Sooners 136 to 48.

The Longhorns defense, which is the fifth-best scoring defense in America averaging 12 points per game against, held the lead for Manning every time he touched the field in the second half after the Moore touchdown. Oklahoma quarterback John Mateer, who had thumb surgery 17 days ago, struggled throughout the day, finishing with 202 yards and three interceptions.

As it stands now, this is the biggest win of Manning's career so far. Expect Texas to jump back into the AP Top-25.
