Arch Manning stats: Manning's career game leads Texas comeback win, but finishes game with injury image

JUMP TO:

Arch Manning and No. 22 Texas had their college football playoff lives hanging by a thread through 45 minutes in Starkville, trailing Mississippi State 31-14 entering the final quarter. The Longhorns were facing a massive upset that would have crushed all postseason aspirations.

But, in a heroic performance defined by a 24-point fourth-quarter rally, Texas tied the game at 38-38 to force overtime. Manning engineered an incredible comeback, leading the offense to 17 unanswered points, finishing the day with a career-high 346 passing yards and four total touchdowns (three passing, one rushing).

However, the dramatic final minutes were marred by concern for the quarterback. On the very first play of overtime, Manning scrambled for a first down but took a punishing hit that left him down on the turf clutching his right leg. He was immediately escorted to the medical tent and did not return to the game.

The Longhorns ultimately escaped Starkville with a 45-38 overtime victory after backup Matthew Caldwell threw the game-winning touchdown. But, the defining question is now the health of their quarterback: despite delivering the best performance of his collegiate career and saving Texas's season, Manning's status moving forward is the main concern after the worrisome exit. Texas hosts No. 10 Vanderbilt next week.
