Michigan football has turned to Biff Poggi as acting head coach for the next two weeks while Sherrone Moore serves a self-imposed suspension. Poggi, who rejoined the Wolverines staff this season as associate head coach after a previous stint alongside Jim Harbaugh, will guide the team in Week 3 against Central Michigan and Week 4 at Nebraska.

Moore announced the move on Sept. 8, two days after Michigan’s 24-13 loss to Oklahoma.

“We’ll operate as a collective unit, Chip (Lindsey) will handle the offense, Wink (Martindale) will handle the defense, JB (Brown) will handle special teams, but the overall operation, Coach Poggi will stand in as interim,” Moore said. “It’ll flow like normal. Obviously, I won’t be on the sideline and be there, but how we handle gamedays … our players, they’ll be ready to go.”

Poggi’s promotion in Ann Arbor comes less than a year after his firing at Charlotte. The 49ers parted ways with him in November 2023 after he compiled a 6-16 record across two seasons. His tenure was defined by inconsistency and heavy defeats.

Charlotte closed his second year with four straight losses, including a 59-24 setback to South Florida. That season finished 3-7, with four games decided by margins of 30 points or more. University leadership determined the program was not showing the progress needed to compete at the expected level.

Despite that disappointing chapter, Poggi’s reputation as a trusted assistant helped him return to Michigan. He had previously been a key figure under Harbaugh before leaving for Charlotte.

The Wolverines, now 1-1, will play Central Michigan this Saturday before traveling to Nebraska on Sept. 20, where Poggi will stand in for Moore on the sideline.
