Nebraska makes bold move to flip Michigan’s 4-star EDGE Julian Walker image

Michigan football secured one of its most important 2026 commitments earlier this summer when four-star edge rusher Julian Walker pledged to the Wolverines. The 6-foot-6, 252-pound prospect from Dutch Fork High School in Irmo, South Carolina, announced his decision on July 1, choosing Michigan over South Carolina, USC, and North Carolina.

Defensive line coach Lou Esposito played a key role in sealing the deal. Walker holds impressive rankings across the recruiting services. He is listed as the No. 4 prospect in South Carolina, a top-20 edge nationally, and No. 197 overall by the 247Sports composite.

Some outlets, however, have him rated even higher, placing him inside the top 150 overall at No. 145. Pulling him out of South Carolina was considered a major recruiting win for Michigan, particularly given the Gamecocks’ efforts to keep him home.

The commitment has not stopped other programs from trying to turn his head. Nebraska extended an offer to Walker on Wednesday, becoming the latest school to challenge the Wolverines for his services.

South Carolina, which never truly slowed its pursuit, also hosted him for a recent game-day visit. Despite that, Walker still plans to visit Ann Arbor again this fall.

Recruiting analysts see why programs continue to push for Walker.

“Walker possesses great overall size and length that correlates well to the next level,” 247Sports’ Clint Brewster wrote. “Walker has the strength and toughness to be disruptive against the run and make plays as a true 3-down player. Depending on body type and how he develops, Walker could potentially move inside on passing downs.”

The Cornhuskers’ interest is notable, given their urgent need to add defensive linemen in the 2026 class. Nebraska currently has 12 commitments but lacks any pledges from edge rushers or defensive line prospects.
