Michigan has finalized short-term coaching plans following Sherrone Moore’s NCAA-issued suspension. Wolverines associate head coach Biff Poggi, who returned to Ann Arbor this offseason after a two-year stint at Charlotte, will serve as acting head coach for the next two weeks.
The decision comes after Moore received a two-game suspension stemming from his involvement in Michigan’s sign-stealing investigation. Though investigators concluded Moore did not fully grasp the extent of former UM staffer Connor Stalions’ off-campus scouting scheme, his deletion of 52 text messages with Stalions led to the NCAA's penalties. In addition to the two-game ban this fall, Moore faces a show-cause order that will sideline him for the Wolverines’ 2026 opener.
For now, Moore will be completely removed from team activities between Sept. 13-20, including preparation for Michigan’s Big Ten opener at Nebraska. “I greatly respect the rules governing collegiate athletics,” Moore said in a statement, adding that his focus remains on leading the program once he returns.
Poggi previously worked alongside Jim Harbaugh as a trusted assistant. He was chosen over coordinators Chip Lindsey and Wink Martindale. The move has drawn mixed reactions from Michigan’s fan base, some of whom expected a current play-caller to take the reins. Poggi’s track record as Charlotte’s head coach wasn't great. He racked up six wins in two seasons but his long-standing ties to Michigan’s program appear to have heavily influenced Moore’s decision.
The Wolverines are in need of a quick rebound. Last Saturday’s 24-13 loss to Oklahoma has heightened pressure heading into Saturday’s noon matchup against Central Michigan, which will be broadcast on Big Ten Network.
