Michigan Wolverines offensive coordinator Chip Lindsey has expressed strong confidence in freshman quarterback Bryce Underwood as the team progresses through the 2025 college football season. Despite high expectations and the typical challenges facing a first-year starter, Lindsey sees Underwood steadily developing and gaining momentum.
Through the first two games, Underwood has been largely contained in the run game. Oklahoma, in particular, kept him under wraps on both running and passing attempts.
“Yeah, I think he’s off to a good start overall. The first game, we got him into a good rhythm, and I think that’s what didn’t happen the other night when you talk about offense and rhythm and all those things,” Lindsey said.
He added, “There’s a lot of ways that affect rhythm, sometimes it’s penalties, sometimes negative plays. We didn’t have a ton of penalties, but we did have some missed opportunities because we just didn’t get some things communicated. That happens sometimes against a good opponent on the road. But I like where Bryce is.”
“One of the things we talked about was taking care of the football. He’s done that. He’s been very, very good with his hands, keeping two hands on it in the pocket, not throwing into a lot of traffic. So that’s good. But there’s lots to build off of and hopefully a lot to learn from,” Lindsey added.

On Michigan’s struggles to find rhythm against Oklahoma, Lindsey explained,
“First of all, you’ve got to give credibility to Oklahoma. They had good defense and have improved since last year. Our goal is to be 50 percent on third downs. We weren’t, and therefore, we didn’t get to stay on the field. Their offense plays more plays.”
He continued,
“Looking back, we just didn’t get it done. Our guys have really responded this week and worked hard at improving in that area, for sure.”
Lindsey’s remarks show a clear belief that Underwood is learning from early-season challenges, with growth and improved performance expected as the Wolverines progress through 2025.
