Kyle Whittingham said a decision from quarterback Bryce Underwood could be coming soon, offering cautious optimism to the transition under the new Michigan coach. The Wolverines fan base is eager for clarity following recent events with the program.
Whittingham appeared Monday's episode of Wake Up Barstool to give an update about settling into Ann Arbor. During the interview, the longtime coache said Underwood appears comfortable and engaged as he weighs his plans for the 2026 season.
“I think Bryce is in a good place right now, and I think we might be getting an announcement here pretty soon,” Whittingham said. “He seems to really enjoy his time here. Has enjoyed his time here and he’s one of the team leaders. He’s a young guy, but he’s one of the team leaders, obviously, by virtue of the position.”

Underwood started all 13 games for the Michigan Wolverines this past season as a true freshman. He completed 60.3% of his passes for 2,428 yards and 11 touchdowns, with nine interceptions, while adding 392 rushing yards and six scores.
The former top overall prospect in the 2025 recruiting class has been the subject of speculation since Michigan fired head coach Sherrone Moore. Whittingham acknowledged that uncertainty remains until a final decision is made.
Utah offensive coordinator Jason Beck has followed Whittingham to Ann Arbor, potentially forming a new offensive scheme to feature Underwood.
With the transfer portal window upon us, Whittingham faces pressure to finalize his staff, retain key players and boost the roster ahead of his inaugural season at Michigan.
