SNL pokes fun at Michael Irvin's amped up Miami Hurricanes fandom image

Michael Irvin has added another milestone to his resume, but he didn't see this coming. A parody on Saturday Night Live wasn't likely for the Hall of Fame wide receiver.

The Super Bowl icon with the Dallas Cowboys was lampooned during Saturday's episode of the hit NBC show. Irvin’s insane fandom during the Hurricanes’ College Football Playoff run has crossed fully into pop culture.

He was portrayed by cast member Kam Patterson, who appeared during “Weekend Update” alongside Michael Che, wearing a shirt nearly identical to the one Irvin donned while celebrating on Miami’s sideline earlier this postseason.

Patterson’s Irvin boasted a “perfect” resting heart rate of 16,000, a nod to the former receiver’s relentless energy, before joking about sprinting from the SNL studio to the national championship game in Miami.

The sketch also referenced one of Irvin’s now-viral habits of dropping to all fours on the sideline as he reacts to big plays, an image that has become synonymous with Miami’s postseason run.

Irvin has been front and center as the Hurricanes advanced to Monday night’s title game against Indiana Hoosiers, celebrating wins over Texas A&M, Ohio State and Ole Miss. Though he graduated nearly four decades ago, Irvin has been a constant presence, embodying the swagger and passion that helped define Miami’s rise in the 1980s.

From 1985-87, he set school records at Miami, capped by the 1987 national championship, before becoming an NFL legend and earning induction into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 2007.

Now, his legacy includes something few athletes ever receive of the being immortalized and exaggerated by SNL. If Miami pulls off one more win, Irvin’s real-life celebration may rival the parody.

The unlikely matchup between Miami and Indiana will kick off at 7:30 p.m. ET on Monday night. ESPN has coverage of the game (Available on FuboTV).

Tickets for the title game on the Hurricanes' home turf of Hard Rock Stadium have skyrocketed to new records. The get-in price is currently over $3,300, according to Stubhub
