Garrett Nussmeier didn’t want to talk about himself after LSU’s first loss of the season. Standing in front of reporters, he set the tone early. “I’m not going to answer any questions about my health right now,” he said. “Currently, right now, obviously, I’m frustrated about the loss and just looking to get back, watch the tape, find ways to get better.”
The Tigers’ quarterback, who went 21-of-34 for 197 yards, one touchdown and one interception, admitted the team never found rhythm in the first half. “We didn’t play good enough in the first half,” he said. “Our defense was not able to get stops for us, uh, early on and we needed to take advantage, you know, and that’s what [Coach Kelly] means by complimentary football. And so it’s frustrating.”
LSU’s rushing attack has been inconsistent, but Nussmeier pointed to progress. “I think we did a good job running the ball in the second half,” he said. “That’s an area that we’ve continued to try and improve on.”
LSU head coach Brian Kelly said Garrett Nussmeier is healthy & added "this is not a Garrett Nussmeier problem."

For Nussmeier, the key will be LSU’s response during the bye week. “I think you’ll tell the makeup of our team from it,” he said. “If we choose to go down and feel sorry for ourselves, then we’ll finish where we don’t want to. But if we do what I believe we will do, and work harder at it, and come at this bye week with an opportunity to fix what we’re struggling at, I think it’ll help us.”
The quarterback pointed to self-inflicted mistakes as the difference in Oxford. “We were able to drive the football,” he explained. “But we just kept shooting ourselves in the foot again.”
He also stressed the importance of staying ahead of the chains. “There were a couple times we had some nice first down plays that ended up being second and 20s,” he said. “That’s on us as an offense. In the Clemson game we were very positive on first down, as well in the Florida game. That allowed us to stay ahead of the chains. That was something we didn’t do a good enough job today.”
