Alberto Mendoza landing spots: Georgia Tech, Florida State among top options for brother of Indiana star QB image

Hours after seeing his brother win a national championship at Indiana, Hoosiers backup quarterback Alberto Mendoza is on the move.

The younger Mendoza entered the transfer portal on Tuesday, signaling his intention to leave Bloomington after two seasons and get the chance to start elsewhere.

Curt Cignetti and Indiana brought in former TCU QB Josh Hoover to start in 2026, so Mendoza would have faced a third season as a backup if he stayed with the program.

Here's a look at potential landing spots for Mendoza, a former three-star recruit, after two seasons at Indiana.

WAY-TOO-EARLY TOP 25: Indiana starts out at No. 1

Georgia Tech

Georgia Tech is the team to watch for Mendoza, according to CBS Sports' Matt Zenitz. The Yellow Jackets lost QBs Haynes King (out of eligibility) and Aaron Philo (transferred to Florida), so Mendoza would have a chance to compete with Graham Knowles and others for the starting job.

Georgia Tech are poised to have a strong running game after adding Michigan transfer Justice Haynes, and the wide-open quarterback room would allow Mendoza to potentially see the field in 2026.

Florida State

In a pivotal year for coach Mike Norvell, it helps to have options. Florida State already added QB Ashton Daniels, but Daniels has thrown for 24 touchdowns and 22 interceptions in his career between Stanford and Auburn and could probably benefit from some competition.

The Mendoza family calls Florida home, and transferring to the Seminoles could allow the Heisman winner's brother to either challenge Daniels in 2026 or take over the job in 2027.

Duke

Duke was put in a tough spot when QB Darian Mensah announced a last-minute portal entry. The Blue Devils reportedly made a push for former Florida QB DJ Lagway, but he ultimately signed with Baylor. Could Manny Diaz try to bring Mendoza to Durham?

Whether Mendoza is ready to take on the starting job for the reigning ACC champions is an unknown, but Duke's options are limited at this point and the Blue Devils would be able to a strong supporting cast around him next season.

Tennessee

Tennessee might be too big a jump for Mendoza, though Joey Aguilar had positive moments after making the leap from Appalachian State. The Volunteers are desperate for quarterback options after missing out on top portal targets. Josh Heupel was able to add former Colorado QB Ryan Staub, but Mendoza could be worth a flier with Staub just as much of an unknown as the Indiana QB.

UNLV

Here's a fun scenario: what if both Mendoza brothers play in Las Vegas in 2026, with Fernando starting for the Las Vegas Raiders and Alberto playing in the same building for UNLV, one of the nation's top Group of 5 programs?

The caveat is the Rebels have already added former Oklahoma and Auburn QB Jackson Arnold, who has struggled in his college career but is a former five-star recruit and is hoping to benefit from a step down. Mendoza could challenge Arnold or simply wait until 2027 if UNLV is willing to take him on, but whether Dan Mullen is looking to add competition for Arnold is unclear.
