Steve Spurrier offered a warm welcome as Urban Meyer joined him this week in one of the most exclusive clubs in Florida football history. Meyer became just the seventh member of the Florida Ring of Honor and only the second head coach alongside Spurrier.
While on Another Dooley Noted Podcast, Spurrier acknowledged Meyer’s complicated path back into the Gators’ spotlight
“He’s had some issues,” Spurrier said. “But time sort of heals all wounds, as we say. So, it’s good. What he did here at Florida, his teams, what our teams did, it won’t be repeated.”
Meyer’s tenure in Gainesville remains one of the most successful stretches in program history. He led the Gators to national championships in 2006 and 2008, posting a 65-15 record and a 36-12 mark in SEC play. His era produced some of Florida’s most iconic players, including Heisman Trophy winner Tim Tebow.
Spurrier noted the difficulty of meeting the program’s strict Ring of Honor criteria, which include winning a national title or multiple SEC championships for coaches. Meyer clears that bar easily, joining Spurrier and five legendary players.
Meyer said was “honored and humbled,” calling his time at Florida “filled with special memories” and praising the support of Gator Nation.
“There is nothing like game day in The Swamp,” Meyer said. “This recognition means more to me and my family than words can express.”
