Could Southern University be the next HBCU to hire an NFL legend as head coach?
The school has turned to a big-time name in its search for a new head football coach, interviewing NFL Hall of Famer and current Colorado assistant Marshall Faulk, according to a report by WAFB-TV in Baton Rouge.
Faulk is in his first season as the Buffaloes’ running backs coach and reportedly met with Southern officials in Colorado. In the first coaching job of his career, the 2000 NFL MVP and Super Bowl champion joined Deion Sanders’ staff ahead of the 2025 season. He is the third Pro Football Hall of Famer on Colorado’s staff, alongside Sanders and defensive line assistant Warren Sapp.
One of the most versatile players in NFL history, Faulk earned three Offensive Player of the Year awards, seven Pro Bowl selections and six All-Pro honors. Before his storied professional career with the Colts and Rams, he was a standout at San Diego State, becoming a three-time first-team All-American and Heisman Trophy runner-up.
This is not the first time Southern has pursued Faulk. He was linked to the job in 2021 after Dawson Odums left for Norfolk State, though the school ultimately hired Jason Rollins on an interim basis.
Michael Vick recently took over at Norfolk State, along with DeSean Jackson at Delaware State. The former Eagles duo took a similar path to Sanders, who started at Jackson State before heading to Colorado.
Southern has narrowed its search to ten candidates. A hire is not expected until after the Bayou Classic with Grambling on November 29 at the Caesars Superdome.
