Kaidon Salter’s first game at Colorado came after four years at Liberty, where he established himself as a dual threat playmaker before transferring to Boulder. His Buffaloes debut ended with a 27 to 20 loss to Georgia Tech. Salter went 17 of 28 for 159 yards while completing 60.7 percent of his passes with one touchdown and no interceptions.

He told Mark Johnson on the Colorado Coaches Show that improvement begins with preparation. “You know, we are just trying to stay positive and keep on building and preparing and just practicing better. That was one of the things that…we’ve tried to focus on this week, just practicing and preparing better so that…everybody knows their assignments and just be better than last week.”

The veteran quarterback admitted he did not use his legs enough. “I felt like it was a pretty okay game, but of course…with me being a dual threat quarterback, some of them downs, I just got to bet on myself and take those third downs so we can move the chains and just continue to keep the ball rolling,” he said. “Last week, I did not do so with…my legs and playing to my best capability with my best attributes that I have. So, this week and moving forward, I know that I need to go out there and just be me and control what I can control and do everything that I’ve done before.

Salter also revealed he played through illness. “I was sick. After the game I had 102 fever.. Kind of played sick, but that’s no excuse for my play style that day.”

For Salter, overcoming challenges has been part of the journey. “My first month of college, my dad almost passed [away from] COVID and ended up in in a coma for four months. So…I’ve been through so much adversity in life to where it’s just to the point where I just want to just have peace, you know, just continue to be better and learn from everything.”

His mindset has not wavered. “Since I’ve been in college, I’ve never lost the first game. So, this is new to m…Everything has to be better for us to go out there and win this Big 12 championship. That one game will not [change] who we are as a team, but if anything it is motivation for us to come out the next week and be better than we were.”

Salter and the Buffaloes will get that chance on Saturday when Colorado hosts Delaware at Folsom Field. Kickoff is set for 3:30 p.m. ET.
