The University of Colorado is preparing to welcome a new face to one of college football’s most cherished traditions.
Ralphie VII, a one-year-old, 700-pound American Bison, will make her highly anticipated debut this weekend when CU hosts Wyoming in Boulder. She succeeds Ralphie VI, known as “Ember,” who retired after four seasons of service.
The addition of Ralphie VII extends an illustrious line of live mascots that stretches back over six decades. She arrives as a gift from the Beauprez family, longtime Colorado alumni and owners of Eagle’s Wing Ranch near Steamboat Springs. With deep alumni and community support, the Ralphie program continues to roll on since its inception.
“Ralphie’s run is iconic and our fans, students, faculty, staff, and alumni take an incredible amount of pride in this tradition which transcends sports,” said Taylor Stratton, Director of the Ralphie Live Mascot Program. “We’re excited to be adding a new Ralphie to the lineage of incredible buffalo that have represented the University of Colorado and have elevated the fans’ passion for our student-athletes.”
"Ember" will transition into a companion role, joining Ralphie V in retirement. Known for her more relaxed temperament, she will continue to receive dedicated care, living out her days on open pastures rather than sprinting down the Folsom Field sidelines.
The Ralphie tradition dates back to 1966, when a donated calf made her first appearance on the sidelines. A year later, the iconic run before kickoff became a permanent fixture, thrilling fans and symbolizing the bold, unyielding spirit of the Buffaloes. While technically a bison, the live mascot has long been embraced as “Ralphie the Buffalo,” a unique emblem of Colorado’s heritage.
Ralphie VII will take her first lap around Folsom Field shortly before the 10:15 p.m. kickoff against Wyoming. As tradition dictates, her nickname will be bestowed by handlers following that debut, according to the university.
