Colorado Buffaloes football legend Shedeur Sanders learns his NFL roster fate on cut day with Browns image

Shedeur Sanders' number is retired at Colorado.

Maybe it was a bit premature or dramatic, but that No. 2 got a ceremony just the same as the No. 12 of Travis Hunter for the Buffaloes this spring.

Given that, it would've been quite a bummer if Sanders didn't even make the first NFL roster he was trying to make.

But thankfully for the Sanders family, Shedeur won't join Shilo in being cut.

The NFL's roster cutdown deadline came and went at 4 p.m. ET on Tuesday, and Shedeur was still a member of the Cleveland Browns.

The Browns had signaled this in advance by trading away quarterback Kenny Pickett on Monday night to the Las Vegas Raiders.

Cleveland will now head into the season with three QBs. Joe Flacco, the 40-year old, is expected to start in Week 1.

Sanders, the fifth-round pick at No. 144, and former Oregon star Dillon Gabriel, who went in the third round at No. 94, are behind Flacco on the depth chart.

Based on preseason depth charts and usage, Gabriel seems to be Flacco's direct backup, with Sanders the QB3.

The Browns may give a chance to both rookies as the season goes on and they evaluate what comes next.

Sanders had an up-and-down preseason. He threw for two touchdowns in a precise preseason debut, then missed game two with an oblique injury. He struggled in the finale, going 3-for-6 for 14 yards and taking five sacks.

He took too many sacks at Colorado, too, so that's a concern.

But overall, Sanders said the right things in press conferences and showed his accuracy on the field (74% in his final year at Colorado).

And he did the important first part, which is make the team. He'll have to continue proving himself from this point on.
