Big 12 announces reprimand and fine against Colorado for offensive chants image

The Colorado Buffaloes suffered a 24-21 loss to No. 25 BYU Cougars on Saturday night. As it turns out, the Big 12 wasn't happy with the conduct of CU's fans. In accordance with the conference's "Principles and Standards of Sportsmanship," they issued the university a public reprimand and $50,000 fine for the inappropriate chants that occurred during the game against BYU.

"Hateful and discriminatory language has no home in the Big 12 Conference," Commissioner Brett Yormark said in a statement. "While we appreciate Colorado apologizing for the chants that occurred in the stands during Saturday's game, the Big 12 maintains zero tolerance for such behavior. Colorado will receive a $50,000 fine in accordance with our Conference policies."

Seven people were arrested for fights that broke out in the stands, according to CU Boulder Police. This was all part of a disheartening night for the Buffs, who dropped to 2-3 on the season.

"The University of Colorado Boulder strongly condemns the use of expletives and religious slurs by individuals in the stands during the recent football game against BYU," a joint statement by chancellor Justin Schwartz and athletic director Rick George read.

"Such behavior is deeply disappointing and does not reflect the values of respect, inclusion and integrity we expect of our campus community. Attending sporting events at CU Boulder is a privilege, and with that comes the responsibility to uphold our Fan Code of Conduct. The university and CU Athletics have a strict policy when it comes to abusive behavior, and those found to have engaged in conduct that is not consistent with our values are held accountable."

Colorado hits the road to meet TCU this Saturday (7:30 p.m. ET, FOX).
