Cade Klubnik might be unavailable for Saturday's game against SMU, according to multiple sources.
The Clemson Tigers quarterback is dealing with a sprained ankle he suffered late in the third quarter of last week's win over Boston College. Klubnik has reportedly been limited in practice this week as well.
According to On3, Klubnik’s availability will be a "game-time decision" and is said to be the "best-case scenario" given the severity of his injury.
Clemson will be preparing Christopher Vizzina and Trent Pearman as the backup options under center.
Vizzina would be the next up. Klubnik’s eventual replacement at Clemson played just 43 snaps during the 3-3 start to the season. Most of it came in garbage time against North Carolina and in the final quarter at BC last week. He has completed 7 of 14 passes for 37 yards and an interception thus far.
Klubnik came into the season as a Heisman favorite in the ACC. He has started 34 consecutive games for the Tigers with 8,710 yards, 68 TDs and 23 INTs since 2022. However, this year has been a struggle for Klubnik. Despite Dabo Swinney saying he has been “elite” as of late, the numbers from a one-win start tell a different story.
“We’ve just been taking our time with him," Swinney said about Klubnik's status. "He’s gone from day-to-day to hour-to-hour. And hopefully by tomorrow he’ll be minute-to-minute. But we’ll put out a report tomorrow night, the first one, and we’ll keep going. He’s literally getting better every hour."
We'll see where Klubnik lands on Clemson's injury reports and if he ends up starting this week. SMU has the worst pass defense in FBS, allowing 315.8 yards per game.
